One in four people in the First District, including 36% of children, live at or below the poverty level – a statistic that is egregious and unacceptable. To combat this problem, Congressman Butterfield fights as an advocate for increasing the network of hospitals spanning the First District. Congressman Butterfield has also worked with his colleagues to introduce bills that would help expedite needed drugs to market, empower pharmacists to practice at the top of their state-issued license, and bring much needed resources to rural hospitals.

In February 2013, Congressmen Butterfield, David Price (NC-04), and Mel Watt (NC-12) sent a joint letter to state lawmakers strongly urging that they reject Senate Bill 4, which exempted the state's participation in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and prevented the expansion of health care to 500,000 North Carolinians.

In addition, Congressman Butterfield is concerned about veterans’ healthcare and the serious deficiencies in mental health treatment for those who need it. He has worked with stakeholders and his committee to find commonsense solutions toward that issue. Congressman Butterfield is also committed to expanding and improving health-related policies and regulations for veterans and those with disabilities.  A healthy America is a stronger America.
