Raising the Debt Ceiling
There is no doubt that America’s mounting public debt threatens our long-term strength and prosperity. But those who recklessly argue that the solution lies in a default on our financial obligations are dead wrong. If Congress fails to raise the debt limit, we will face another financial crisis and shake the world’s faith in the United States.
The politically motivated, reckless posturing of those who argue we could default on our debt – abandoning our obligations to our creditors – is duplicitous and irresponsible. They argue that America should skip paying its national credit card bill, as if that is somehow the fiscally responsible course. In fact, it would be the height of fiscal irresponsibility and all but guarantee a global financial crisis. Fiscal responsibility requires fair reductions in spending and forward-thinking investment in economic growth – not a childish abandonment of our financial obligations. America cannot, like a deadbeat, simply walk away from its commitments.

Thank you to everyone who attended our town halls this month in Conyers and Covington or who tuned in on our Facebook live feed. We had four successful town halls in every county in the Fourth District, and I thank everyone who participated. We had four excellent discussions on the issues of the day. I’m hosting a series of town halls throughout the Fourth District to hear your thoughts and concerns on the issues most important to you. All events will be held from 6 to 7:30 PM. I’m holding my first town hall of the series at the Lou Walker Senior Center on Tuesday, August 13th. On Thursday, September 5th I’ll be at Snellville City Hall. On Tuesday, October 8, I’ll be at the Rockdale Career Academy and on Thursday, October 10th I’ll be at the Newton County Courthouse.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Johnson voted to increase the paychecks of American workers by passing H.R. 582, the Raise The Wage Act, to gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025 and restore the value of work in our economy by lifting struggling workers and their families out of poverty.

CLARKSTON, GA – On Monday, hundreds of residents attended Rep. Hank Johnson’s Resources Fair at Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston, which helped connect constituents with local, state and federal agencies that provided job-readiness training, information on the television/film industry and employment opportunities.
21 Savage teamed with Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson to expand “Bank Account,” his national financial literacy campaign, aiding local youth in the Atlanta area. The rapper and lawmaker collaborated with nonprofit organizations Juma and Get Schooled to teach kids the importance of financial management.
