“This attack on the environment must also be combatted as yet another instance of dog-whistle politics, this time a targeted and calculated attack against Native Americans in Utah,” said Rep. Bass.
“Congress cannot sit idly by as news of the Libya slave trade spreads,” said Rep. Bass, top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Africa. “Slavery is a crime against humanity. This resolution calls for a comprehensive response, both domestically and internationally, to this report, which is what we’ll need going forward to take an effective stand against this tragedy.
This week, the impeachment inquiry has reached the House Judiciary Committee, which is one of the two committees that Rep. Karen Bass sits on in Congress. The historic stakes of the situation are not lost on her or her colleagues in the House.
Know that she will approach the proceedings with the deliberation they deserve, pursue the truth, and defend our democracy.
"The death of four American soldiers in Niger and the recent exposure of a Libyan slave trade has brought significant international attention to the continent,” said Rep. Bass, who is the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Africa.
“The opioid crisis is devastating families and our already over-burdened child welfare system,” said Rep. Karen Bass, Co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth. “We have learned so much from the crack cocaine epidemic and how it affected those in the child welfare system.
"The shocking images that emerged last week of African people for sale in Libya is a crime against humanity. The time for the international community to act is now. If Libyans cannot end slave auctions, then the international community will be required to step in immediately.
“Just 7 years ago, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, killing more than 230,000 residents and displacing nearly 3 million. Since then, the resilient island nation has been plagued by compounded environmental disasters, including a cholera outbreak and most recently, a category 5 hurricane.
“A dictatorship cannot flourish when knowledge is common and abundant.
“The news of President Mugabe’s resignation after a week of political uncertainty that included a military takeover and possible impeachment has led the people of Zimbabwe to rejoice. Now that President Mugabe has stepped down, I hope to see the country rapidly return to civilian rule in accordance with Zimbabwe’s constitution.
