I just received an updated briefing from FEMA and wanted you to have the most recent information on Hurricane Dorian and its impact on North Carolina. After stalling for an extended period the storm is now moving 5mph to the northeast along the Florida coast. Though it has been downgraded in category, Hurricane Dorian remains potentially dangerous with 110mph winds and an expanded wind field as the scope of the storm has expanded to hold a radius of about 60 miles with the strongest winds on the northern portion of the storm.

This visit to a dying veteran reminded me that what we do is much more than sound bites, debates, bills, and texts. Those things faded in that small room, and the true power of compassion, respect, and honor was distinctly evident and real. These are the things that will rise above the rhetoric that marks our time.

Trey’s heart for service is genuine. Though most members of Congress are quickly forgotten, Gowdy’s combination of character and skill will be remembered, though not replicated, for years to come. Trey made a real difference, not just an argument. Godspeed, Trey Gowdy. America is a better place because of your service and I’m a better person because of your friendship and example.

North Carolina native, Brock Long, the Administrator of FEMA expressed in our call today, “Emergency management is a team sport, from the individual all the way to the federal government.” The National Guard is being activated and more than 200 rescue team personnel have arrived at Fort Bragg. President Trump approved the emergency declaration requested by our North Carolina delegation and the Governor.
