More on Education and Opportunity

August 25, 2020 Press Release
Providing our children with the opportunity to succeed in the face of adversity is vital to securing their bright futures in life. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has thrown a wrench into the schooling plans for millions of Americans. I am proud to support the School Choice Now Act to expand their education choices and continue fighting for their success not only in the classroom, but beyond.

As the home of the largest HBCU in our nation, the monumental Morrill Act of 1890 has created countless opportunities for North Carolinians over the past 130 years. Each of the nineteen Historically Black Colleges and Universities established through this legislation, including North Carolina A&T State University, contribute immensely to the lives, education, and futures of thousands of students across the country. I am honored to continue my advocacy for these institutions through this resolution commemorating their historic anniversary.
May 8, 2020 Press Release
While families across North Carolina and this nation struggle with the effects of school closures, the last thing on parents’ minds should be their childrens’ rising education costs. By expanding the use of 529 plans for learning from home expenses, the financial burden put onto our state’s parents will be lessened, allowing them to focus on the most important thing -- their children.
April 29, 2020 Press Release
Today is either the day that a wall of injustice around student-athletes started to crumble, or the day the NCAA used more tactics to bait and switch young men and women from some of America’s most vulnerable communities. My hope is the former and that the proposal on name, image, and likeness is genuine. If enacted in good faith, this move will save the college sports we love by creating equity, transparency, and opportunity.

Second Chance Month serves as a reminder of the true meaning of the Great American Comeback – renewal. The path to redemption is paved with the hard work and dedication of the organizations and nonprofits who empower those seeking to turn the page and achieve the promise of opportunity. This month we pay special thanks to them and everyone who helps counsel those taking the steps to become whole again.
March 4, 2020 Press Release
“When we came to Congress, we made a promise to serve all North Carolinians, regardless of background, and work to open doors of hope and opportunity. We quickly learned that HBCUs were integral to that effort and that you can have a ‘R’ by your name, but build genuine relationships and create opportunities across all the communities you represent. These efforts are some of my most proud accomplishments in the House. I am blessed with bridges we have built across communities and know they will have a lasting and positive impact for generations of students.”
February 27, 2020 Press Release
“This was my vision four years ago when we launched our first HBCU Fly-In. It’s a joy to partner with my friend, Senator Tim Scott, celebrating our HBCUs and the role they have played in our communities over the years. These efforts are some of the work I am most proud of while serving in the House. I look forward to continuing to advocate for these valuable institutions for many years to come.”
January 16, 2020 Press Release
The power of prayer and the potential of our students should never be suppressed. Prayer is a uniting force, a reason for hope, a call for virtue, and one of the most powerful tools for our next generation of leaders. I am thankful that President Trump and his administration have taken this action to affirm and protect the right of our students and teachers to participate in this honored American tradition.
January 2, 2020 Press Release
“We are overwhelmingly impressed by this group of extraordinary young men and women who will continue to demonstrate impeccable character, scholarship and leadership as they represent our community and our state. Their fervor to sacrifice and join the call to service at such a young age is an inspiration to us all. Each of these students have our full support as they seek acceptance to a U.S. Service Academy."
December 19, 2019 Press Release
“This is a historic victory for the HBCUs of North Carolina and our nation. This legislation would not be law if not for the steadfast work of Representative Alma Adams and Senator Tim Scott, along with the consistent support President Trump has shown HBCUs and their students. The FUTURE Act is an example of why I came to Congress: to make a difference and promote hope and opportunity for all North Carolinians.”
