Tri-Caucus And Democratic Caucus Leaders Condemn Trump Administration’s Unconstitutional Attempt to Exclude Undocumented Immigrants from Census

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Trump issued a memorandum expressing his intention to unconstitutionally exclude undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census count, a move which will mean depriving communities of federal funding and representation. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Judy Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), Rep. Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Rep. Joaquin Castro, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, issued the following joint statement:

“The U.S. Constitution is clear: everyone, regardless of immigration status, must be counted in the Census. President Trump’s unconstitutional Executive Order is just his latest attack against immigrant communities—the same people who are part of our nation’s essential workforce during this pandemic. The Trump administration should be focused on addressing the COVID-19 public health crisis and doing everything it can to support a complete and accurate count in the 2020 Census so that the next time there is a public health crisis, our communities are equipped with equitable funding and resources.”
