While the U.S. Navy has been sounding the alarm about a resurgent Russian and growing Chinese submarine threat, much of the problem stems the service’s much diminished anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. Even the combined might of today’s Russian and Chinese submarine fleet does not come close to matching the capabilities or threat posed by the once-mighty Soviet Navy – which boasted roughly 240 submarines before the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

The Navy will soon finish initial prototyping of new weapons tubes for its Virginia-Class submarines designed to massively increase missile firepower, bring the platform well into future decades and increase the range of payloads launched or fired from the attack boats.The new missile tubes, called the Virginia Payload Modules, will rev up the submarines’ Tomahawk missile firing ability from 12 to 40 by adding an additional 28 payload tubes – more than tripling the offensive strike capability of the platforms.

A planned class of ballistic missile submarines, to be designed and delivered by Electric Boat, will be named "Columbia" after the District of Columbia, a Navy official confirmed Friday. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, heralded the decision as a milestone for the work that has gone on in Groton since 2008, noting Columbia is a "venerable name" that "every American can feel a connection to."

If technological progress allowed for it, the United States Navy would like to develop two key features for its next-generation SSN(X) successor to the Virginia-class attack submarines. One feature would effectively turn the future attack submarine into a underwater mother-ship for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) while another would dispense with noise-generating moving parts such as a propulsor or driveshaft in the propulsion system.
