SEEC leadership stands with those calling for racial justice

Jun 5, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – SEEC Co-Chairs Reps. Paul Tonko, Doris Matsui and Gerry Connolly and Vice-Chairs Reps A. Donald McEachin, Chellie Pingree, Matt Cartwright, Mike Quigley and Alan Lowenthal made the following statement in response to nationwide calls for our country to address long-standing racial injustice.

“We know that the clean, sustainable future we are fighting for cannot exist without a democracy that truly provides peace and justice for all.

“As a coalition, we recommit ourselves to the fight against racism in many forms, including helping to eradicate environmental racism that disproportionally pollutes black and brown communities.

“The pain and anger brought about by the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor and so many others has led us to a real and urgent discussion about racism in this country and reinforced the critical need to address long-standing racial disparities. We know that a sustainable, just and lasting peace can only be found by taking up the long-overdue work of rooting out racism across our entire society.

“We have seen these tragic stories before. This time has to be different.”
