STATEMENT: Reps. Khanna, Maloney, Davis on GAO Report on Campus Sexual Violence Data

May 21, 2020
Press Release

Washington DC –  Today, Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17), Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-12), and Rep. Susan Davis (CA-53) released the following joint statement on the GAO’s release of the Approaches and Strategies Used in College Campus Surveys on Sexual Violence. The report was conducted following a request by the Representatives on January 30, 2018.

“The report makes clear that campus climate surveys are a useful tool to inform faculty, parents, and students about sexual violence occurrence on campus, and can help overcome limitations in law enforcement data. The information gathered through these surveys of students can help college and government officials better address the crisis of sexual violence on campuses. Due to a lack of uniformity and shortage of resources, not all colleges are able to develop or conduct these surveys effectively.

“We strongly oppose the rule recently finalized by Secretary DeVos’s Department of Education that guts Title IX protections for survivors of campus sexual violence, and may in fact reduce the number of survivors willing to come forward to report these incidents. While we hope that this new policy will not go into effect, we believe it is especially important now to focus on strategies for obtaining useful data on sexual violence on campuses and ensuring that the experiences of students can be clearly communicated to college leaders. Well-conducted campus climate surveys should be a key component of that effort. We look forward to working to make sure schools have the resources they need to conduct these surveys and make all students feel safe and supported.”
