U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) has served on the U.S. Helsinki Commission since 2009. He is committed to confronting global threats such as climate change and government corruption, and to promoting international cooperation on peace and human rights. Since 2013, Senator Whitehouse has served as the Democratic lead for the congressional delegation to the annual Munich Security Conference.

In addition, Senator Whitehouse serves on the Senate Budget Committee; the Judiciary Committee; the Finance Committee; and the Environment and Public Works Committees. He has championed bipartisan legislation to reform the criminal justice system, to strengthen our nation’s cybersecurity, and to address the nation’s opioid abuse epidemic. He is also a leading voice on environmental and climate policy in Washington.

A graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law, Whitehouse served as United States Attorney and Attorney General of Rhode Island before being elected to the Senate in 2006.

He and his wife Sandra, a marine biologist and environmental advocate, live in Newport.  They have two children.
