“We do not have a government by the majority. We have a government by the majority who participate.” -Thomas Jefferson

Dear Friends,

In his Gettysburg address, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” This and the quote from Thomas Jefferson above should tell you how important it is to participate in the electoral process. We have a choice to participate in the process or to be governed by those who participate in the process. According USA Facts, voter participation in the last decade is 45% for midterm elections and 57% for presidential elections. Thus, even in a presidential year, 43% of eligible voters are remaining silent. This robs them of their voice in determining policies that impact them. I would encourage you to be a participant. Study the issues, talk with others, and even consider volunteering, especially this year, when much help will be needed to open voting precincts. There are many things to do over the next few weeks. I want to encourage you to think about what your right to vote really means. It is not just your right, but it is also part of our right to govern ourselves.
