WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Earth Day:

“As we celebrate our planet today, we must recommit ourselves to taking the necessary steps to protect it and its extraordinary diversity of life.  With carbon pollution continuing to drive a dangerous warming of the Earth, with our oceans rising and destructive storms raging, the challenges we face will keep worsening unless we work as one planet to address them.  We still have the capability to save our planet, and Earth Day is a reminder that we must not shrink from the challenge of doing so.

“That is why, next week, House Democrats will bring to the Floor H.R.9, legislation taking action to affirm the principles of the Paris climate agreement even after President Trump stated his intention to withdraw our country from that pact. Democrats will use our Majority to promote higher fuel efficiency standards and push for cleaner air and water. We recognize that climate change is a critical threat, and only a serious and sustained effort that is global in scope can succeed in slowing it and, hopefully, setting our planet back into a sustainable trajectory.”
