Jim believes that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects a citizen’s right to own a firearm. However, Jim also believes very strongly that the founding fathers purposely left the Amendment open to interpretation to ensure that the people – through their elected representatives – could respond to the ever-changing framework of American society. States have the right and responsibility to enact and enforce sensible gun control laws, and Jim is proud that Massachusetts is a leader in gun violence prevention. In order to curb gun violence, Jim has co-sponsored a number of bills, including legislation to prevent gun trafficking; close the “gun show loophole”, which allows private-party sales of firearms to unlicensed individuals; restrict the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds; ban bump stocks, which increase the rate of fire of semi-automatic weapons; and establish a Select Committee on Gun Violence Prevention. Jim also believes that we must work diligently to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, and provide better mental health resources to members of our community who need it. As an active member of the House Democratic Caucus Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Jim will continue to encourage the House leadership to take up these and other gun control measures. The goal is not to prevent law-abiding citizens from possessing firearms, but to make sure guns never fall into the wrong hands. |
