Service Academy Nominations

Thank you for your interest in the U.S. Service Academies. As your Representative in the U.S. House, each year I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of people to four of the five service academies. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Best wishes to you as you pursue your goal of attending a U.S. Service Academy and serving our country.

For assistance with academy nominations, please contact Barbara Taylor in my Lima District Office.

We encourage you to apply for a nomination to more than one military academy.   Congressman Jordan can give more than one nomination to an applicant.  You MUST have an open file and keep it current at each academy you are seeking a nomination.

You are also encouraged to apply to Senator Brown and Senator Portman as well as Vice President Pence.  You WILL have to maintain current and complete files at each office to which you apply.  There is no sharing of information between the offices.

The 4th Congressional deadline to receive all required information for completed application packets in Congressman Jordan’s Lima office is 4:00 p.m. October 8, 2020.  If your file is not complete by the deadline, you will not be eligible to be considered for an interview by the 4th Congressional District Review Board.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to make certain that all required documents are received in a timely manner.  It is strongly recommended you send all information early. We also encourage you to “keep control” of your application. In other words it is your responsibility to me certain all information is with your application.  Do not assume someone will send information for you.

Your Completed Application Should Include:

·        Test Scores (To be considered you must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and/or the American College Testing (ACT).  Do not delay in taking the SAT and/or ACT.  Your application packet with test scores must be complete by the October 8, 2020 deadline.  We will update a file as the student makes test results available to our office.

·        High School Records – a legible certified copy of your high school transcript must be included with your application.

·        Photograph – one wallet size photograph of yourself – be sure and print your name on the back of the photo.

·        Letters of Recommendation- Three letters of recommendation are required.  These letters must be signed by the author.

·        Personal Essay – you are required to submit a personal essay (maximum one page) on your motivation and why you believe you are qualified to be nominated to attend a military academy.  You must sign your essay.

The Interview: Congressman Jordan’s Academy Review Board will interview qualified applicants who have a submitted a completed application packet at the OSU Marion Branch, Marion, OH, on Saturday, November 14, 2020. The Board is comprised of graduates of a military academy or retired military.  Eligible applicants will be notified of the date and time of their interview in advance.

The Nomination:  We use the Competitive method, which is the method favored by 80% of Members of Congress.  Under this method, Congressman Jordan can submit an unranked slate of up to ten nominees for each vacancy.  Each year we have at least one vacancy at each academy.  The academies have their own selection board that ranks our ten nominees in order of merit in accordance with the specific academy system.  The most highly qualified is selected for an offer of appointment to fill that one vacancy.  The other nine nominees then go into a national “pool” where they compete with other applicants for available slots.
