Honoring Our Commitment To Our Veterans
Supporting our veterans, and ensuring they receive the benefits they've earned, will always be one of my top priorities. Our nation prides itself on our sacred obligation to prepare and equip those we send into harm's way, and to care for them when they come home. It is our job in Congress to fulfill this obligation.
While the federal government has recently taken steps to ensure our veterans have access to education, good jobs, and health care, we need to do more. Today, thousands of veterans are homeless and close to 13,000 of these are veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. While veterans represent only 7 percent of the U.S. population, they represent 13 percent of homeless Americans. It is simply inexcusable that this problem persists today.
We need to redouble our efforts to help those who are still waiting for the benefits that they have earned, and we must work tirelessly to provide the tools necessary to enable our heroes to thrive in the country they so bravely defended. I will continue fighting to ensure that our veterans and their families get the care and benefits they need, expanding educational and employment opportunities, and ensuring they get the health care they deserve.

SCHAUMBURG, IL — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today hailed the unanimous Senate passage of his bill, H.R.1844, to rename the Elgin Post office in honor of Corporal Alex Martinez, an Elgin native and the only individual from the city to lose his life in combat since the terror attack on September 11, 2001. This important bill passed the Senate this week following the House’s unanimous passage of the bill in July and Senator Dick Durbin’s advocacy in support of the measure.

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Tim Walberg (MI-07), Brett Guthrie (KY-02), and Bobby Rush (IL-01) yesterday introduced H.R. 3527, the POW Priority Care Act. This bipartisan legislation would elevate former Prisoners of War (POW) to Priority Group 1 in the scale used by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to determine eligibility for health care benefits and services. Currently, POWs are allocated to Priority Group 3.

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was named Chairman of the House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. The announcement will give Krishnamoorthi jurisdiction over important pocketbook issues such as education, workforce development, income inequality, health care, consumer protection and data privacy through his role as chairman of the subcommittee.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, the House passed the appropriations bill for Military Construction and Veteran Affairs programs for FY2019. Included in the funding package was $400 million specifically to fight opioid addiction among veterans. This follows the House-passed Krishnamoorthi amendment that was included in the National Defense Authorization Act which encouraged Department of Defense (DoD) to enact a plan to prevent and treat opioid use among DoD dependents.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, the US House of Representative passed a bipartisan amendment introduced by Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Andy Barr (R-KY) to require the Department of Defense to conduct a study on the extent of pharmaceutical shortages in the military health and TRICARE system. The purpose of this study would be to shed light on whether quality of care in military surgical and emergency situations has been compromised because of shortages in anesthetics and pain management medications.
