FEMA: Hurricane Seasonal Preparedness

Each September, National Preparedness Month reminds us how important it is to prepare for disasters. For the next four weeks, National Preparedness Month will highlight easy-to-follow steps that your family can take to improve preparedness at home.

Take time this week to make a plan to be ready for disasters and emergencies that could impact you. This includes ensuring your plans consider impacts the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic could have.

When making your plan, consider:

  • Include a plan for all members of the family, children, youth and adults and seniors in developing a family emergency plan.

  • Tailor your plan to your household’s specific needs, such as care of children, seniors, pets or other specific needs like medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance.

  • Talk with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be needed to care for them in your home. Visit Ready.gov/Pandemic for details.

  • Collect and secure critical documents (such as financial, insurance, medical and other records) in a safe place so you have the documentation needed to start the recovery process without delay.

  • Complete the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit to help you prepare financially and get tips to help reduce the financial impact disasters.

  • Sign up for emergency alerts in your area to receive life-saving information from your state and local municipality.

In preparation for the 2020 hurricane season, FEMA has updated tools so that preparedness plans include measures to protect against the spread of coronavirus should people need to evacuate. To learn more on how to prepare before, during, and after a hurricane, visit: Ready.gov/hurricanes.

With organizations across the nation determining when and how to resume operations while protecting the well-being of their employees and communities, FEMA has released: Planning Considerations for Organizations in Reconstituting Operations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” This new resource builds upon the White House guidelines for Opening Up America Again by providing further reconstitution planning recommendations for state, local, tribal, territorial and private sector stakeholders.

FEMA created a 36-minute video tutorial to help FEMA grant recipients and subrecipients understand how to properly contract during emergency or exigent circumstances. The guidance is outlined on the FEMA COVID-19 Fact Sheets & Guidance webpage and the COVID-19 guidance: Procurements Under Grants During Periods of Exigent or Emergency Circumstances. Additional resources are available on the FEMA website.
