Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Cedric Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement regarding the settlement between BP and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for 18.7 billion with $6.8 billion directed to Louisiana, to compensate for damages from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon tragedy.

“On April 20, 2010, we witnessed the most devastating offshore drilling accident in American history,” said Rep. Richmond. Tragically, 11 workers lost their lives, and millions of gallons of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico, threatening nearly 5 million acres of coastal wetlands and 1300 miles of shoreline.”

“Today’s settlement is critical to bolstering the long-term health of the Gulf of Mexico, and providing much needed funds to the local communities whose natural resources and economic vitality were damaged by the spill. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure these resources are properly allocated to achieve these goals.”
