The U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis is charged with delivering ambitious climate policy recommendations to Congress, in order to achieve substantial and permanent reductions in pollution and other activities that contribute to the climate crisis.

The select committee was authorized by House Resolution 6 on January 9, 2019, and will publish a set of public policy recommendations for congressional climate action by March 31, 2020.

Its members include experts in environmental justice, coastal flooding, clean energy development and other issues that are vital for addressing the climate crisis.

Background and Jurisdiction

Acknowledging the threat of climate change, Speaker Nancy Pelosi created the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis through H.Res.6, which was adopted on January 9, 2019, and gave the Select Committee the following jurisdiction:

The sole authority of the Select Committee shall be to investigate, study, make findings, and develop recommendations on policies, strategies, and innovations to achieve substantial and permanent reductions in pollution and other activities that contribute to the climate crisis which will honor our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet for future generations. The Select Committee may, at its discretion, hold public hearings in connection with any aspect of its investigative functions.

The Select Committee will work with the standing committees of jurisdiction to develop new policy ideas for building a clean energy economy. The committee's rules were adopted on March 28, 2019.
