Larson, Davis Statement on Social Security Administration Reposturing Plan

Washington, D.C.  – Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John B. Larson (D-CT) and Worker and Family Support Subcommittee Chairman Danny K. Davis (D-IL) released the following statement on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) reposturing plan to continue service to Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I appreciate Commissioner Saul and the SSA sharing with us their plan for reposturing the agency to continue to serve the American people during the pandemic. My chief concerns are that the public is being served safely and that SSA employees are working in a safe environment. I will examine this proposal closely and work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure beneficiaries receive exceptional service in a safe manner and that employees are safe doing their jobs,” said Larson.

“I know that constituents are experiencing a growing pent-up need for assistance.  I am also keenly aware of the concerns of our dedicated public employees about ensuring a safe working environment as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to demonstrate its tendency to re-assume exponential spread when we relax efforts to suppress the transmission of the virus.  Commissioner Saul’s plan deserves consideration and I will work with all stakeholders to ensure the plan will serve the best interests of all,” said Davis.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Larson and Davis have been working to ensure that both beneficiaries were being served and that SSA employees were working in safe environments. They have urged Commissioner Saul to protect the public and employees by maximizing telework while also minimizing disruptions to services during the COVID crisis. Larson has also requested reviews by the SSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the agency’s telephone services and of its visitor and employee safety efforts during the pandemic.
