Important and Urgent Information for Individuals Denied Public Service Forgiveness

If you were denied Public Service Loan Forgiveness because some or all of your payments were under a the wrong repayment plan, you may qualify for a TEMPORARY opportunity that will fund the forgiveness.  Congress just allocated $350 million for the Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness opportunity to help public servants who would have qualified for Public Service Loan Forgiveness except that they were in the wrong plan. All the other requirements must be met (e.g., 120 on-time payments, direct loan, full-time employment, working for a qualified employer).  

If you believe you qualify, act QUICKLY—this is a temporary opportunity. The monies go out on a FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVED basis.   NOTE – The studentaid.ed.gov website indicates that TO BE ELIGIBLE:

  1. You have to already submitted AND BEEN DENIED due only to the nature of your payment plan;
  2. Had at least 10 years of full-time employment certified by a qualifying employer and approved by FedLoan Servicing;
  3. Made 120 qualifying payments under the new requiremetns for the Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness Plan.

If you have questions about Public Service Loan Forgiveness, please contact Fed Loan Servicing. If you meet all the eligibility criteria but did not formally apply because you were told you were in the wrong plan, you likely have to formally apply for Public Service Loan Forgiveness and be denied before you can qualify for the Temporary opportunity.
