Davis Votes NO on Republican Budget Resolution
10/05/17
Congressman Danny K. Davis today voted NO on the Republican Budget Resolution and voted YEA on the alternative resolutions offered by the Congressional Progressive Caucus (108 votes), the Congressional Black Caucus (130 votes) and the Democratic alternative. The Republican Budget Resolution was eventually passed by on a straight party line vote with 18 Republicans also voting NO.
Davis statement on the Republican Budget Resolution passed today:
This is not a budget, it is a massive tax give away to the wealthiest 1 percent. A non-partisan analysis shows that 80 percent of the Republican tax cuts would go to the wealthiest 1 percent with an average annual tax cut of $200,000 per year. Despite the bravado and extravagant claims by President Trump about cutting taxes for the middle class it is likely that some middle class tax payers will see an increase in their taxes and reductions for low and middle income taxpayers will be minimal.
At the same time the tax and budget plans voted on in the House today would cut $4 trillion from Medicare, Medicaid, education, the environment, housing, and a host of other human services. The Republican tax plan will explode the deficit unlike the Progressive Caucus and Black Caucus budgets which put the budget back on track to balance. The Republican claims that “dynamic scoring” will show that the deficit will not be as bad as predicted are outrageous in their level of fantasy – there are no economic models which show any such numbers. The Republican Budget pours tens of billions of additional dollars into the military budget which has been unable to pass an audit since, well since ever, since it has never has been able to be audited.
This budget is a disaster for our people, will further increase economic inequality and will inflict lasting harm on our nation’s economic future. It is incumbent on us all to continue to resist this budget and build a fair, humane and sustainable budget consistent with our nation’s values and best interests.
