Davis Statement on President Trump's Ban on Transgender Persons Serving in the Military

President Trump's arbitrary announcement that he is banning transgender people from serving in any capacity in our armed forces comes on the 69th anniversary of President Harry Truman's executive order desegregating the military, in which he declared "equal treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services."  This is a giant, dangerous step backwards for all Americans. It is an insult to the thousands of patriotic transgender individuals currently serving our nation.
 
His statement regarding the "costs" of transgender persons service are without substance and are contradicted by studies and by the experience of other nations whose armed services include transgender persons.  
 
This decision is based on blatant prejudice and political opportunism. There is no question here of military readiness or concern for the safety and security of our troops. A person's ability to serve our country has nothing to do with gender identity or expression.
