Just a few years ago, affordable, quality health care was out of reach for millions of Americans. Many people lived in fear of being one illness away from losing their home and everything they owned or that they would not be able to obtain coverage because of a pre-existing condition. That changed dramatically with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The ACA has increased health insurance quality and affordability for uninsured Americans. It also expanded coverage for more Americans by preventing insurance companies from denying coverage due to a pre-existing conditions and making sure kids can remain on their parents’ insurance plans until the age of 26.
Today, over 20 million more Americans have health insurance because of the ACA. However, the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are seeking to repeal and replace it with their new so-called healthcare plan (TrumpCare). In NJ12 alone, the uninsured rate has gone from 11.1% to 8.6% since the ACA was implemented,
and this 2.5 percentage point drop in the uninsured rate could be wiped out and reversed if the ACA is repealed.
