WASHINGTON -- This week, U.S. Congressman David Trone (MD-06) convened calls with elected officials and medical leaders throughout Western Maryland to discuss the recent spikes in COVID-19 cases and the steps we can take to mitigate the spread of the virus. Trone has been working with local Western Maryland elected officials and medical leaders since March to determine the local needs of each county. Trone will continue to stay in touch with health officials and hospital leaders in the next coming days.

WASHINGTON -- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Fighting Emerging Narcotics Through Additional Nations to Yield Lasting (FENTANYL) Results Act, which U.S. Representatives David Trone (D-MD) and Michael McCaul (R-TX) introduced earlier this year. The bill would increase global cooperation in the fight against the trafficking of synthetic drugs like fentanyl. The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

WASHINGTON -- Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) announced that his bill, the State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act (H.R. 2466), unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bipartisan bill must now be passed by the U.S. Senate before heading to the President’s desk for signature. Trone introduced the State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act in May of 2019 along with Freshmen Working Group on Addiction members Reps. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), and Denver Riggleman (R-VA). The legislation authorizes $9 billion over six years in flexible funding for State Opioid Response (SOR) Grants and Tribal Opioid Response (TOR) Grants to fight the opioid epidemic on the front lines.

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) and a coalition of stakeholders from Maryland and Pennsylvania announced $6 million in funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for preliminary engineering work on the Pennsylvania portion of U.S. Route 219, signaling a commitment to beginning construction on the 11-mile corridor connecting Maryland and Pennsylvania within the next 10 years. Approximately 8 miles of the corridor has yet to be constructed.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David Trone, and Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (all D-Md.) today announced $100,000 in federal funding to purchase training equipment for the Allegany College of Maryland Allied Health Simulation Workforce Development Program. Funding comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and will benefit hundreds of students in the Western Maryland region. Allegany College of Maryland will be matching the $100,000 federal funding award.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David Trone, Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Anthony G. Brown, and Jamie Raskin (all D-Md.) today announced $2,337,908 in federal funding to improve maternal and child health care services across the state. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It will help the Maryland Department of Health’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau lower maternal mortality, reduce infant mortality and enhance the delivery of maternal care.

The grant will allow Garrett County Community Action Committee, Inc. to offer homeowners grants and/or low-interest loans to fund critical home improvement projects, helping ensure that homes meet property and safety standards.

If finalized, the proposal would hand over ownership of Purdue to a public trust that would manufacture OxyContin on behalf of the state and local governments suing Purdue for the damage caused by their illegal marketing of this highly addictive, powerful opioid. Purdue and the Sackler family perpetrated one of the most egregious criminal acts in American history, intentionally addicting millions of unsuspecting people to powerful painkillers for profit and directly contributing to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans.

The conversation comes as a recent report from the Joint Economic Committee found that nearly 50% of young adults report having symptoms of depressive and/or generalized anxiety disorder.
