WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. David Trone, D-Md., and a coalition of stakeholders from Maryland and Pennsylvania announced Tuesday $6 million in funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for preliminary engineering work on the Pennsylvania portion of U.S. 219, signaling a commitment to beginning construction on the 11-mile corridor connecting Maryland and Pennsylvania within the next 10 years. Approximately 8 miles of the corridor has yet to be built. The project will connect U.S. 219 to Interstate 68 in Maryland and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. David Trone, D-Md., announced that his bill, the State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act (H.R. 2466), unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bipartisan bill must now be passed by the U.S. Senate before heading to the president’s desk for signature. Trone introduced the State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act in May 2019 along with Freshmen Working Group on Addiction members Reps. Kelly Armstrong, R-N.D.; Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J.; and Denver Riggleman, R-Va.

COVID fatigue is the feeling of restlessness and exhaustion caused by the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams stated that “people are tired and aren’t taking mitigation measures as seriously as before.”

MARYLAND (WDVM) — Seventeen-thousand Marylanders have applied for unemployment benefits just within the last week, according to Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, and that number is only going up. With coronavirus restrictions increasing across the state, many residents are once again facing the possibility of losing their jobs. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the unemployment rate in the state has more than doubled, according to Maryland Congressman David Trone. And as cases spike all over Maryland, state legislatures are looking for ways to continue to assist their constituents as current protections expire.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Rep. David Trone (all D-Md.) announced $50,000 in federal funds to repair and rehabilitate the homes of low-income residents in Garrett County. The grant will allow the Garrett County Community Action Committee to offer homeowners grants and/or low-interest loans to fund critical home improvement projects, helping ensure that homes meet property and safety standards.

Wednesday morning's cloudy weather prevented a celebratory takeoff to break it in, but the official opening of an extension of one of Frederick Municipal Airport's runways is expected to provide an economic and transportation benefit to the city and county. The project extend's the airport's Runway 5-23 by 600 feet, to a length of 5,819 feet, which will allow the corporate jets that use the facility to take on more fuel and passengers than they previously had, Airport Manager Rick Johnson said.

When renovations are complete, and when COVID-19 pandemic guidelines permit, Easterseals Adult Day Services will have a new facility in Hagerstown. The structure at 701 E. First St. once housed physical therapy services. It has been gutted inside and is being renovated for Easterseals, which provides a variety of adult day services for people with disabilities. When finished, it will replace Easterseals' current facility at 101 E. Baltimore St.

Now that Hispanic Heritage Month has come to a close, it’s important that we reflect on the incredible contributions our Latinx community has made to Maryland and to the country as a whole. From advancing the arts and sciences, to serving in our armed forces, to starting millions of small businesses, our country is indebted to the hard work and activism of generations of Latinx Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month felt different this year, though. As our nation struggles to combat the coronavirus, the Latinx community is being left behind.
