Protecting the Environment As a mother of two young daughters and three grown step sons, Congresswoman Trahan strongly believes we must prioritize the protection of our environment. At home in Massachusetts and across the country, our coasts, forests, and farmlands have already begun to bear the brunt of extreme weather patterns and increasingly destructive natural disasters. It is more important than ever that we act to prevent further harm. Green New Deal On February 7, 2019 Congresswoman Trahan became an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal. This resolution calls for a national effort to transition away from fossil fuels in favor of clean, renewable energy as well as investments in energy efficiency improvements. Stop Sewage Overflow Act On April 29, 2019 Congresswoman Trahan and Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL) introduced legislation to support the cleanup of the Merrimack River. Congresswoman Trahan’s Stop Sewage Overflow Act dramatically expands and improves the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grant program (Section 221), which is used to award federal grants to states and municipalities for the planning, design, and construction of modern wastewater treatment systems and prevent raw sewage from entering our waterways. Nashua River Wild and Scenic River Act On February 5, 2019, Congresswoman Trahan and Congresswoman Ann Kuster (D-NH) introduced the Nashua River Wild and Scenic River Act. The legislation, which was co-authored by Sen. Markey, designates several miles of the Nashua River and its tributaries as scenic rivers under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. This designation will help preserve the rivers for generations to come. The bill has been signed into law as part of a broader public lands package. STOP CSO Act On June 19, 2019 Representatives Trahan and Seth Moulton introduced the Sewage Treatment Overflow Prevention through Community Sanitation Outreach (STOP CSO) Act of 2019, or the STOP CSO Act. The STOP CSO Act would require local governments to alert residents within 4 hours if stormwater overwhelms sewage plants and carries sewage into rivers and watersheds. The bill also allows state and local governments to use grant funding to create the alert system. Climate Action Now Act On May 2, 2019 Congresswoman Trahan voted in support of H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, legislation the Congresswoman previously cosponsored. The bill will require the Trump Administration to remain in the Paris Climate Accord and mandate the development of a serious plan for the United States to meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets.
