After a contentious election, it is important we come back together and take stock of the unifying values and liberties which make our country great. While we have been endowed by our Creator with the freedom to self-govern, which we exercise through free and democratic elections, this freedom has endured because of the sacrifices of our veterans, as well as the men and women currently serving in our military who put their lives on the line so that we may enjoy these rights.

Every November 11th we celebrate the men and women who defend our freedom – past and present. While November 11 was originally known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I, we now commemorate all United States veterans on this day.

This year I had the opportunity to attend two Veterans Day celebrations; one at Gering Junior High School, and at our local American Legion Post #36. I appreciated visiting with young people who will someday determine our future and with the heroes who have made their mark in support of our country.

Each year on the last Monday of May, we pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. If it were not for these heroes, we would not have the freedoms we currently enjoy and exercise every day.

Thanksgiving is the time of year we come together with family and give thanks for our many blessings. This year I’m most thankful for our one-year-old son, Zeke, my wife, Andrea, and our endlessly loving family members who support us at every turn. I’m also thankful for renewed economic growth which increases opportunity for future generations of Americans.

Veterans Day, which was originally known as Armistice Day, marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, which ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. 2018 represents its 100-year anniversary. In 1954, Congress expanded the holiday to honor not only the sacrifices of those who fought in World War I, but all of our veterans, and renamed it Veterans Day.
