Toni's Kitchen is partnering with the Montclair Public Schools and Bloomfield Public Schools to ensure that all children receiving school lunch will have adequate food in their homes during the upcoming school closures. Each family will receive a bag of groceries and fresh produce every week school is closed .In addition, they are sending out meal bags to 80 seniors identified as at-risk by the Senior Services Department in Montclair. The NFSB Food Pantry will continue grocery distribution according to the regularly scheduled dates. In accordance with guidance from state and local Departments of Health to minimize contained crowding, open air food distribution will take place outside the NFSB Annex at 169 Chestnut Street. CUMAC works to alleviate hunger and its root causes to those in need of regular and emergency assistance every month in Paterson, Passaic County, and New Jersey. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, CUMAC has cut back to quarter operations with a reduced staff, they remain open during normal hours, and are following CDC guidelines. The supply chain has been affected due to rushes at supermarkets, however, CUMAC has partnered with local restaurants that have seen closures and are sharing their fresh food inventory. Normal Marketplace operations have been suspended for the duration, instead they are bagging up healthy groceries to give out to clients.

The Food Locker operated by the Sussex County Division of Social Services can help anyone in the county that needs food. At times food for pets is available. No appointment is necessary and they are open Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, except holidays.

NORWESCAP Pathways 2 Prosperity (Sussex County)

LOCAL GROCERY STORES WITH SPECIAL HOURS FOR SENIORS: 

Updated 7/10/2020. Please be advised that Governor Murphy signed Executive Order 122 on April 8, 2020, mandating that customers wear cloth face coverings while grocery shopping, except where doing so would inhibit that individual’s health or where the individual is under two years of age.

  • Acme Supermarkets: Seniors and other high-risk customers can shop Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • ALDI: Reserved time for vulnerable shoppers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • BJ's Wholesale Club: All locations will open one hour early from 8 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for members who are age 60 or older at a designated entrance.
  • Costco Wholesale Club: Starting Monday, July 13, any member 60 and older can shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m.
  • Foodtown Parsippany: Morning hours for seniors and those with disabilities are 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. 
  • Kings Food Markets: Announced it was reserving the “first hour of shopping for our elderly and high-risk guests.” Customers can check local store hours online.
  • ShopRite: Some locations have designated seniors hours on their own. 
    • ShopRite Bloomfield: Has announced that they will have reserved shopping hours for elderly or high-risk customers age 60 and older every Friday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. until further notice.
    • ShopRite Byram: Reserved a register open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. each day to be used only by seniors and high-risk customers so they can check out of the store quickly and with ease. The special shopping hour for these customers is from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Monday to Thursday.
    • ShopRite Chatham: Reserved hours for elderly guests are 7:00 a.m. to 8 a.m. and reduced store hours to 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    • ShopRite Lincoln Park: Seniors and high-risk customers can shop Tuesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
    • ShopRite Little Falls: High-risk or senior customers who are 60 and over can shop on Tuesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. 
    • ShopRite Livingston: Reserved high risk and elderly customer shopping from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. as well as delivery services through ShopRite from Home. Resumed back to normal hours. 
    • ShopRite Morristown: Reserved hours for elderly and high risk guests are 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and store hours have been reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
    • ShopRite Nutley: Open early 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday only for high risk and elderly customers 60 and older.
    • ShopRite Parsippany: Designated registers to #14 and #16 for high-risk and senior customers 65 and over. The special shopping hour for these customers is from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. every day.
    • ShopRite Rockaway: Recommended that customers who are 60 and over or high risk shop between 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, when stores have the least customer traffic.
    • ShopRite Sparta: The special shopping hour for high-risk and senior customers is from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Monday to Thursday.
    • ShopRite Wayne: Reserved 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays for senior shoppers and reduced store hours to 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
    • ShopRite West Caldwell: Designated registers to #17 and #19 for high-risk and elderly customers, age 65 and over. The special shopping hour for these customers is from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. every day.
    • ShopRite West Orange: Offering senior and high risk customer shopping from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. as well as delivery services through ShopRite from Home. Store hours reduced to 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Stop & Shop: People ages 60 and up or with weakened immune systems can shop at all locations from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m. daily using a designated entrance, which will be marked at their local store. 
  • Target: Target has reduced its operating hours from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and is reserving the first hour of shopping on Tuesday and Wednesday for the elderly and those with underlying health concerns.
  • Trader Joe’s: The first hour of daily shopping from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. is reserved for senior customers. 
  • Walmart: Each store will offer an hour-long senior shopping event at 6:00 a.m. or before the regular store open every Tuesday for customers ages 60 and older. Pharmacies and Vision centers will also be open during this time. Each day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. seniors 60 and up, first responders, customers with disabilities, and anyone designated high-risk by the CDC can pick up Walmart Grocery. When placing a Walmart Grocery order, select 'At Risk Only.'
  • Wegmans: Customers 65 and older, as well as others at high risk, can shop from 7:00 a.m to 8:00 a.m. daily. All NJ locations have shifted hours from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
  • Whole Foods (Montclair, Parsippany, Madison, Morristown, West Orange): Offer a “seniors only” hour from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. daily. Regular store hours will resume from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

How do I apply for assistance with food and other basic needs during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Our state has an online application and screening tool, NJHelps, that can be used for many of the basic services designed to help those struggling to make ends meet.

  • Those who receive food assistance through NJ SNAP should have received an extra benefit payment on Sunday, March 29. Benefits will be higher in April to help address critical food needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Households eligible for the NJ SNAP (based on household size and income) supplemental benefit will receive the difference between their regular SNAP benefit and the maximum benefit for their family size.
  • Supplements will be in addition to standard monthly benefits and directly loaded to NJ SNAP recipients’ Families First EBT cards.
  • Under federal policies implementing the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, households that already receive the federal allowable maximum SNAP benefit are not eligible for supplemental payments.

 

Food Assistance K-12:

School districts throughout NJ-11 are offering drive-up meal service for both breakfast and lunch for students ages 18 and under.  Please check your school district’s website for details.
