Today, Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard released the following statement on the passing of Representative Donald Payne (NJ-10):
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend and colleague Donald Payne earlier today, and I join the congressional community in remembering the legacy he leaves behind. As the first African American elected to Congress from New Jersey, he was a powerful and important voice as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. He fought tirelessly for human rights and social justice both at home and abroad, and he worked hard to improve people’s access to healthcare and education.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, as well as his constituents in the 10th District of New Jersey.”
