About Coronavirus

The coronavirus causes illness in some people ranging from mild to extremely severe and deadly. It is spread through close personal contact, touching an object or surface with the virus on it then touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and through respiratory droplets produced when sneezing and coughing. People at higher risk for this illness include older adults and those who have serious medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and lung cancer.

Symptoms

Symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, cough, and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. If you begin to experience any of these symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.

Protection and Preparedness

While there is currently no antiviral treatment specifically recommended for coronavirus, the precautions below can help protect yourself and community:

  • Cough into your elbow and not into your hand
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often with warm water for at least 20 seconds 
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Disinfect commonly used home and work surfaces, including mobile devices

Legislation

Last week, I voted to help pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act in the House of Representatives. If passed by the Senate and signed into law, this bill will serve as a necessary first step in our response. However, Congress needs to do much more to provide meaningful relief for workers who will have difficulty making ends meet on their mortgages, rents, and other significant bills. That is why last week, I called on President Trump and House Speaker Pelosi to start putting money in the pockets of everyone impacted by this crisis immediately. In the coming days and weeks, I will continue to fight for a direct cash assistance proposal.
