Greg Pence Resolution to Honor Beirut Bombing Attack Highlighted in Marine Corps Times

Washington, DCMarine Corps Times published a profile on U.S. Representative Greg Pence today highlighting his time in the U.S. Marine Corps and his Resolution to dedicate October 23rd as a National Day of Remembrance for the anniversary of the bombing of Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983.

“The bombing killed 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers, and was the deadliest day the Marine Corps has seen since the fight for Iwo Jima, Japan, during World War II.

Marine veteran and Indiana Republican Rep. Greg Pence on Oct. 16 introduced a resolution to the House of Representatives to designate Oct. 23, 2020, a national day of remembrance.

“Having the day of remembrance ... that’s what Semper Fi is all about,” Pence told Marine Corps Times in a Wednesday interview.”

Pence served in the Marines from 1979 to 1984 and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines. In 1983, his battalion was ordered to Beirut, Lebanon.

Pence introduced H.Res. 1197, expressing support for the designation of October 23, 2020, as a National Day of Remembrance of the tragic terrorist bombing of the United States Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983.

Cosponsors of this bipartisan legislation include fellow service-members Mike Gallagher (R-WI-08), Gil Cisneros (D-CA-39), and Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24).

Background: In October 1983, an Iranian national drove a truck bomb into the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The devastating bombing killed 241 American service members, including 220 Marines. The attack was perpetrated by Hezbollah, a terror group founded, trained, and financially supported by the Iranian regime.
