The housing crisis is already slamming low-income renters, but it’s about to get much worse if Congress doesn’t act. In 39 days, the federal eviction moratorium and expanded unemployment insurance benefits will expire. Lower income workers, disproportionately people of color, who lost their jobs because of the pandemic and are behind on monthly payments will be at great risk of being out on the streets. This is unacceptable. It’s inhumane for Senator McConnell and the GOP to block votes on measures to help these families, those facing home foreclosures, and the tens of millions of Americans who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. They need to stop focusing on confirming an endless parade of right-wing judges, and start providing emergency relief to the American people.

This week, along with Marylanders from across the state, I was proud to virtually celebrate the opening of the U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski Room at the Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. Enoch Pratt opens new doors for so many Baltimore families as it did for Senator Mikulski. Libraries are open to everyone and empower them by providing accessible and invaluable educational resources to the community. This new room will build upon that work with adult literacy and women’s leadership programs, but also as a dynamic space that tells the story of an inspirational leader and fierce advocate for justice who has dedicated her life to serving the people of Maryland. As I always say: “When Barbara Mikulski is with you, the Force is with you.” Congratulations to Senator Mikulski and Enoch Pratt!

Congratulations to Midshipman Sydney Barber on becoming the first Black female to command the Brigade of Midshipmen. Maryland is incredibly proud of you and you will be an inspiration to all those who will stand on your shoulders.

By spreading lies about voter fraud, the Trump Administration and most Republican senators are threatening our national security, hurting our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, eroding confidence in our democracy, and impeding Joe Biden’s ability to unite and heal the country. Each hour that this lie persists does more damage to our country. That’s why I’m asking you to speak out and demand that GSA Administrator Emily Murphy stop stonewalling ascertainment so we can start the peaceful transition of power. It’s long overdue.

Thanks to Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic and Mitch McConnell’s refusal to bring a robust pandemic relief bill to the floor, we keep breaking disturbing new records every day. Food insecurity was already a problem in this country, but now over 40% of Americans don’t have reliable access to food. To make matters worse, the majority of Americans experiencing food insecurity have said the expiration of federal assistance programs, such as enhanced emergency unemployment bene...fits, stimulus payments, and nutrition assistance programs, have made it far more difficult to put food on their tables. It's a dereliction of duty for Mitch McConnell to send the Senate home knowing families across the country will go hungry over Thanksgiving without a relief package. We must pass the Heroes Act or other meaningful relief for American families. People are hurting and we must provide help.
