Internships

WASHINGTON, DC

In the Washington, DC office, joint press/legislative internships run throughout the fall, spring and summer semesters. DC interns are compensated for their work at a rate of $15/hour for up to 30 hours per week.

In Washington, DC, interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, draft social media posts, design graphics, and answer constituent letters on various issues. As a result, interns will gain valuable experience engaging in both the legislative process as well as congressional communications in a high-volume office.

To apply to intern in the DC office, please send your resume, a short writing sample (no more than 2-pages), 2 sample tweets on a current event, a sample graphic (optional) and your dates of availability to julia.albertson@mail.house.gov.

Due to the high volume of applicants, a response is not guaranteed. We do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, or socio-economic status, all are welcome and encouraged to apply.

The DC internship program is closed for the foreseeable future due to the rapidly changing COVID-19 public health crisis.

DISTRICT OFFICE (Santa Clara, CA)

District Office (DO) interns play a critical role in helping constituents with federal issues, briefing staff on substantive issues and helping put on monthly town hall meetings.  Interns learn how to work effectively in a professional office environment in general, and a Congressional office in particular.  DO interns are compensated for their work at a rate of $15/hour, with a standard 12 hours per week (spread over 3-4 days).  Because our constituents depend on the work of interns, commitment to serve the entire semester/quarter term is required.  Because of the limited number of internship openings in the DO, we are only accepting applications from college students or recent college graduates.

To apply for a District Office internship, submit the form below and also email your resume, a short writing sample if available (no more than 4 pages), your dates/times of availability and reference contact information directly to District Director Tom Pyke (tom.pyke@mail.house.gov).  The reference should be from a former manager or coworker in a job or volunteer project, rather than a teacher from a class.  A more detailed job description will be provided in response to your email.

Applicants with ties to the 17th Congressional District will take priority over those from other districts/states. We do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, or socio-economic status; all are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Applications for Summer and Fall 2020 District Office internships are closed. Applications for Winter 2021 are open but conditional on the rapidly changing COVID-19 public health crisis.
