Immigration

As the son of immigrants, I know firsthand how strongly immigrants believe in and contribute to the American dream. Immigrants help strengthen our economy and enrich our culture, and I will fight to protect immigrants’ rights while ending abuses of the system.

Undocumented immigrants contribute to American society and we must protect their legal rights and status. I will advocate for legal status for DREAMers, pathways to citizenship for productive adults, family reunification visas, guest worker visa programs, and asylum for refugees. America is, at its heart, a nation of immigrants—it is our responsibility to fix the system to support all Americans, current and future.

I will also strive to reform the H-1B visa program to ensure that corporations cannot displace American workers in favor of cheap, foreign labor who they can easily control and underpay. Silicon Valley’s leadership in the world of technology was achieved in large part thanks to immigrants who came here on H-1B visas. For that I am grateful, but we must fix this program by restoring it to its original intent, protecting all workers from systemic abuses by profit-driven companies, and preserving the limited H1-B visas for high-skilled foreign workers.

A migrant died earlier the same day Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Fremont) arrived at the El Paso Del Norte Processing Center, a migrant detention facility at the Southern border. The Silicon Valley  congressman says he found out about the fatality through a supervising border agent who confided the tragic detail last week to Khanna and other members of a congressional delegation to the U.S.-Mexico divide.

The migrant’s cause of death was unknown, but Khanna says it was most likely due to the strain of the treacherous journey that brought him there.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Trump administration is playing defense after news reports that paint a horrifying look inside a migrant detention center just outside of El Paso, Texas.

"The New York Times story is a fabrication," Trump told reporters Sunday. "Those are people that are very happy with what's going on because, relatively speaking, they're in much better shape right now."

The New York and El Paso Times article cited unnamed border patrol agents who claim they've been "ringing the alarms" but "no one was listening" as they "grapple with the stuff of nightmares."

RO KHANNA LEARNED A LOT from immigrants – who just happened to be his parents. Khanna, born in Philadelphia during America's bicentennial, is the son of Indian immigrants who came to this country to build a better life for their children. Early on, Khanna says, his parents made clear what his obligations were as a first-generation American-born citizen.

Democrats in Congress think they can finally beat Donald Trump on immigration.

Senior Democrats this week leaped into the debate over border policy — livestreaming their trips to detention facilities, calling for the ouster of Department of Homeland Security officials and mobilizing the party around “a battle cry to protect the children.”

It’s a stark shift for Democratic leaders who have largely tried to avoid immigration, an issue that has divided their party and which Trump has used as a political bludgeon.

WASHINGTON ― House progressives showed Speaker Nancy Pelosi they had the power to drag legislation further to the left. Now, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is showing them he has the power to make them irrelevant.

After the House passed an emergency border supplemental bill on Tuesday 234-195, the Senate passed its own version of the $4.5 billion legislation on Wednesday 84-8.

The question of what it means to be American has been debated since the founding of our republic, and we are at another moment when the question has taken on a new urgency.
