Congressman Al Green on #EndSARS, “Black Lives Matter Wherever They May Be.”

Oct 27, 2020

(Houston, TX) – On Tuesday, October 27, 2020, Congressman Al Green released the following statement in support of the #EndSARS peaceful protest movement:

“I am deeply troubled by reports that describe a shocking and seemingly unwarranted crackdown on peaceful protesters by Nigeria’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad, commonly known as SARS. The policing tactics of some SARS officers have been protested in Nigeria and abroad after reports of wrongful killings of many innocent persons on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, Nigeria,” Congressman Al Green stated. “I have written to the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as well as United Nations officials to express my support for peaceful protests, urging the Government of Nigeria to work toward comprehensive security reform.”

The Congressman, who represents Houston’s International District, added, “There are more than a million Nigerian migrants across the globe. With nearly 400,000 Nigerian immigrants and their children residing in the United States and the City of Houston having one of the largest Nigerian populations nationwide, we cannot relegate these injustices to being just a Nigerian problem. This is a matter of international concern, as Black lives matter wherever they may be.”
