CALL FOR ART:

Congressional Art Competition

“An Artistic Discovery”

Suggested Theme: Western New York

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2020

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) is inviting local high school students to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”  Participants are invited to submit a work featuring a Western New York theme or any piece of original art that meets the requirements detailed below. This nationwide art competition exemplifies the significance of art education in our nation’s schools by highlighting the work of our nation’s most gifted young artists.

Congressman Higgins’ district art show will be featured in the Larkin at Exchange Building at 726 Exchange Street in Buffalo, NY and the winning piece will be sent to Washington, D.C. to be displayed in the Capitol Building. The winning student and a guest will also receive complimentary airline tickets from Southwest Airlines to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony with other talented High School artists from across the country at the end of June.  Additional prizes will be awarded.

Deadline: Original artwork must be submitted to Congressman Brian Higgins’ Buffalo office at 726 Exchange Street, Suite 601, Buffalo, NY 14210 by 5:00pm on Wednesday, April 1st, 2020.  Our office telephone number is: 716-852-3501.

Public Gallery: All submissions will be on public display in the first-floor lobby of the Larkin at Exchange Building at 726 Exchange Street in Buffalo from April 10th – May 4th.

Virtual Gallery/Contest:  Beginning Monday, April 20th, all submissions will be posted in a virtual gallery on Congressman Higgins’ website with additional viewing opportunities through the Congressman’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.  Students, family members and friends along with the general public will be able to vote for their favorite pieces online until Friday, May 1st.

Competition Winners:  Local leaders in the Western New York art community will select the winning piece which will be sent to our Nation’s Capitol.  Additional prizes will be awarded for the first and second runner up and the top vote earner on the online gallery.  An Award Reception for teachers, students and their families will be held on Monday, May 4th from 6pm-7pm in the display area on the first-floor lobby at the Larkin at Exchange, 726 Exchange Street.

Guidelines: Each piece must include a student release form, label and must be presented ready for display with a picture hanger attached.
