Since 1982, the Congressional Art Competition has encouraged and recognized the artistic talents of students from each participating Congressional District.
Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the Nation, as well as in our Congressional District.
The contest is open to all high school students in the 17th District. One winner will be chosen to represent the 17th Congressional District of Texas in our nation's capitol, where it will be seen by thousands of people. The first place winner also has an opportunity to meet with other similarly talented young artists at the unveiling of their art at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.and that winner will receive two round-trip airline tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend the unveiling of their artwork in the Capitol and a reception honoring the winners.
We will also select a number of finalists for this year’s competition. The winner, finalists, and their families and teachers will be honored in a special reception at an art gallery in the district. the finalists will have their artwork hung in our offices in Austin, Bryan, Waco, and Washington D.C. for the next year.
There is no specific theme for this year’s competition; any original piece that a student has created and fits the size limits and guidelines for appropriateness can be entered. Congressional Art Competition rules dictate that artwork must be two-dimensional, and with a frame may weigh no more than 15 pounds and be no larger than 26 inches long, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. The art work may be
- Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
- Drawings - including colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal – it is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed
- Collages (two-dimensional)
- Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
- Mixed Media
- Computer-generated Art
- Photographs
Deadline for all 2020 submissions is Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
All entries submitted must be original in concept, design and execution.
