Gun Violence Prevention

Gun violence rates in America are hundreds of times higher than in other industrialized countries – and it’s time we change that.

The House has passed several life-saving bills, including H.R. 8, which would require universal background checks, and H.R. 1112, which would close the Charleston loophole. Unfortunately, the Senate has yet to act on this legislation.

Rep Dean also knows that we can do much more to prevent gun violence from amplifying the already-tragic consequences of domestic violence

Finally, Rep. Dean is working to bring down America’s suicide rate; within her first two months in office, she wrote an amendment to allow people at risk of suicide to temporarily transfer their firearms to another person during a crisis – legislation that passed the House.

Rep. Dean’s own first bill – H.R. 869, the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Actaddresses a new danger: plastic guns that are undetectable to metal detectors or other detection devices. Rep. Dean’s legislation will prohibit the possession of any firearm that is undetectable by airport-level detection devices; the bill also requires any firearm with all of its major components attached to generate a gun-shaped image in the detection systems.

Basic gun safety legislation isn’t a radical idea. In fact, background checks are supported by more than 90 percent of the American people – and 83 percent of gun owners. These measures are compatible with the Second Amendment – and they save lives.

Today, the U.S. House passed a bill to close the Charleston loophole. Currently, federal law permits gun sales to proceed if the purchaser’s background check hasn’t cleared in three days. H.R. 1112 – which passed by a vote of 228 – 198 – will allow law enforcement additional time to investigate would-be gun owners who don’t pass an initial background check.
