High school students are invited to take advantage of an opportunity to engage with their artistic talents and compete to win a trip to Washington, D.C. by entering the 2020 Congressional Art Competition. The deadline for online artwork submission is April 27, 2020.
The Congressional Art Competition is an annual competition hosted by congressional districts around the nation. The winning piece will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one full year, where it will be viewed by distinguished visitors, Members of Congress, and tens of thousands of tourists.
Additionally, the winning artist will also receive two complimentary Southwest Airlines tickets and a complimentary hotel room for two nights to attend the unveiling reception in Washington, DC. The reception is tentatively scheduled to take place on July 22nd, 2020, with the date subject to change.
The competition is open to students grades 9-12. Artwork must be two-dimensional, and can range from paintings, to drawings, collages, photographs, and more. Students interested in applying should contact their school’s art teacher or principal for information on submitting their artwork and apply at this link.
**COVID-19 Update**
Due to recent public health concerns surrounding COVID-19 and adjustments in school calendars, the 2020 Congressional Art Competition for the 11th District of Texas will now be conducted entirely online. Students will register and upload their artwork through an online portal provided by their school's art teacher or administrator. As an additional note, I have extended the artwork submission deadline to Monday, April 27, 2020.
The 2020 Guidelines can be found here. Please ensure that all guidelines are followed closely to ensure each piece of art is eligible to win. Note: 26” X 26” X 4” is the maximum size for framed artwork. However, the artwork should not be framed, just matted. The winning entry will be framed before being shipped to Washington.
Unfortunately, circumstances require that my office also cancel our annual reception at Angelo State University where I typically recognize the winner and all who submitted an entry. However, we will not let these challenges keep us from holding the competition. Every year, I am inspired by the imaginative and talented artists who enter, and I look forward to bringing another excellent piece up to Washington.
