Internships

Internships provide an opportunity for current college students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in a Congressional Office and learn more about the legislative process. Interns can expect to learn about the legislative process and the functions of a congressional office. The hours can accomodate the students' course schedule, but generally run from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

We offer full and part-time, semester-long internships in our Washington D.C., Wilson, and Durham offices. Although internships are unpaid, interns will gain valuable hands-on experience and can receive academic credit.

Intern duties will vary, but include: answering phones, researching legislation for the Member and staff, attending hearings and briefings, responding to constituent letters, sorting mail, drafting press releases, and assisting staff as needed.

Applicants should have skills in:

• Writing
• Communications
• Organization

Applicant must:

• Be detail-orientated
• Have the ability to manage multiple tasks on a deadline
• Have a positive attitude and a willingness to work on a variety of tasks

Interns are not required to be from the First District, but connection to the district is a plus.
