Jobs & the Economy

Congressmember Karen Bass knows that we must do all we can to protect put the millions of individuals who lost their jobs as a result of this pandemic back to work. Economic relief and COVID-19 relief go hand in hand. As Speaker of the California State Assembly, she was able to help guide the state out of  economic decline and is using that experience to inform her decision amid this new crisis.

As jobless claims continue to spike—with millions of new claims being filed every week—millions of Americans are finding themselves unable to pay their bills. This is especially true for low-income families, which are more likely to pay higher rates for basic utilities, including electricity and heat. While some individual states and utilities have put in place moratoriums on disconnections, these policies currently provide an inconsistent patchwork of protections, with many Americans at risk of falling through the cracks.

On the campaign trail, then-candidate Donald J. Trump asked the African-American community “What do you have to lose?” in reference to voting for him. When the Rep. Bass and members of the CBC executive leadership team met with President Trump in March 2017, the caucus answered his question in the form a 130-page policy document titled, “We Have A Lot to Lose: Solutions to Advance Black Families in the 21st Century.” President Trump never responded to the document.
