Allred, Reschenthaler Resolution to Support U.S.-Iraq Relationship Passes House

Washington, D.C. -- Today a resolution sponsored by Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) and Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA-14) on the importance of the U.S.-Iraq strategic relationship passed the U.S. House. Both are members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. 

The bipartisan resolution calls on Congress and the Administration to continue to support cooperation between the two nations and highlights the importance of both the security and economic aspects of the bilateral relationship. 

“We should always lead with our American values on the global stage and work to strengthen relationships with our strategic partners, like Iraq,” said Allred. “We must support our partners in Iraq and across the Middle East, and by doing so we can fight terrorism, promote security within Iraq and encourage stability across the region. I thank Congressman Reschenthaler and my colleagues in the House for supporting this measure’s passage and affirming the U.S.-Iraq relationship.” 

“I saw firsthand the importance of the United States-Iraqi partnership for promoting peace and stability in the Middle East as a Navy JAG prosecuting terrorists in Baghdad, Iraq,” said Reschenthaler. “I am proud our colleagues joined us to recognize and support this critical diplomatic and security partnership, which has empowered our nations to work together to counter threats from Iran and violent terrorists in the region.”

In addition to the importance of the relationship between the two nations, the resolution highlights the challenges Iraq is facing such as a possible resurgence of ISIS, economic crises and rising COVID-19 cases. Read the full text of the resolution here.
