Allred Again Urges Action on Health Care, Report States North Texas Cities Have Among Highest Uninsured Rates in U.S.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) today called on Texas to expand Medicaid, and for the Administration and the Senate to come to the table to expand health care coverage and lower costs. This comes after a new report using Census data stated that North Texas cities had among the highest uninsured rates in the country. For example, 30% of adults in Garland and 27% of adults in Dallas lacked health insurance. The national uninsured rate is 9.2% according to the U.S. Census Bureau. 

“North Texans need more health care, not less, and I am working to do everything I can to expand access and lower costs across the board,” said Allred. “Texas should expand Medicaid and extend coverage to over a million Texans. I again urge the Administration to drop its harmful lawsuit looking to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and come to the table to work with Congress to help more people get access to the care they need.” 

In June, Allred helped pass the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act, a bill that would lower costs, further secure protections for people with pre-existing conditions, negotiate lower drug prices and expand coverage. 

Additionally, the report states that 43% of Hispanics, 16% of African-Americans, and 18% of all children lacked health insurance in Garland. While in Dallas, 39% of Hispanics, 20% of African-Americans and 17% of all children lacked health insurance in Dallas.
