A strong education system is critical to maintaining America’s economic edge in the 21st century. Investing in our public schools is key to ensuring these opportunities are available to every child in America, no matter their socio-economic background, race, or gender. As the son of a former Dallas public school teacher, Congressman Allred will strongly support funding for our public schools, making sure that schools and their teachers are well equipped to prepare our students for the future. This includes rebuilding crumbling schools and establishing universal pre-k so that every child, no matter where they live can get a good start on their education and parents get much needed relief in child-care.
As student loan debt climbs to record heights, we need to lessen the burden our young people and their parents take on as they pursue higher education. That is why Congressman Allred is committed to making college affordable and accessible to all, and to expanding vocational and training programs to ensure our students are prepared for an evolving workforce. An investment in our kids is an investment in the future of this country, and Congressman Allred will fight for every child to have the education they need for success.

Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), a former Ohio State and NFL receiver, introduced in the House his version of a bill to allow college athletes to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness through endorsements deals. While expected, the news is significant, as Gonzalez’s bill is bipartisan in nature, essential for legislation to potentially pass through a split Congress. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) is introducing the bill with Gonzalez, alongside three Republican and three Democrat cosponsors.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my office made the difficult decision to cancel our bi-annual in person Service Academy Days, held in April and October, for the safety of all involved. Instead, this year I am hosting a “Virtual Academy Day” on my website! This Virtual Academy Day will provide students, parents and school faculty important information about each of our nation’s service academies.
After getting her degree, Lisa owed about $70,000 in federal student loans. In 2017, Lisa filed an application with the Department of Education (DOE) to discharge her loans due to total and permanent disability. The application was approved, and Lisa’s loan balance became zero. However, in late 2019 and early 2020, the loan balance was suddenly reinstated, and Lisa owed payments again even though she was still disabled and living on a fixed income.
U.S Rep. Colin Allred said it’s clear now that Texas reopened too soon and with too few precautions. “Though you can’t predict a pandemic, it didn’t have to be this way,” he said.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) today commended the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) for earning a $3.3 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The grant will be used to support UTD’s ongoing research to develop technology around offshore wind turbine systems.

The topics of discussion included expanding job training, connecting businesses with students, talent retention and ensuring that higher education and certifications are accessible and affordable.
