The CBC Health Braintrust supports legislation aimed at reducing health disparities and improving health outcomes in the African American community.

H.R. 5479 – Health Equity and Accountability Act

A comprehensive, broadly-supported legislation to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health care access and outcomes introduced by the Tri-Caucus. Find a section by section summary here.  

H.R. 539 – Action for Dental Health Act

Amends the Public Health Service Act to reauthorize oral health promotion and disease prevention programs through FY2020.

H.R. 768 – Stop AIDS in Prison Act of 2015

Requires the Federal Bureau of Prisons to develop a comprehensive policy to provide HIV testing, treatment and prevention for inmates in Federal prisons.

HR 1271 – Concussion Awareness and Education Act of 2015

Provides for the systematic research, surveillance, and dissemination of information regarding concussions, as well raise awareness surrounding concussive injuries. This legislation would also establish the Concussion Research Commission to identify and formulate systemic recommendations to address key components of concussion research, awareness, education, treatment and prevention.

H.R.1586 – REPEAL (Repel Existing Policies that Encourage and Allow Legal) HIV Discrimination Act of 2015

Calls for review of all federal and state laws, policies, and regulations regarding the criminal prosecution of individuals for HIV-related offenses.

H.R.1706 – Real Education for Healthy Youth Act of 2015

Gives America’s youth the knowledge they need to make educated decisions about their health.  The bill would expand comprehensive sex education programs in schools and ensure that federal funds are spent on effective, age-appropriate, medically accurate programs.

H.R.2730 – National Prostate Cancer Plan Act

Establishes in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the National Prostate Cancer Council on Screening, Early Detection, Assessment, and Monitoring of Prostate Cancer to: (1) develop and implement a strategic plan for the accelerated development of diagnostic tools for prostate cancer, (2) review the effectiveness of diagnostic tools for prostate cancer, (3) coordinate prostate cancer research and services across federal agencies, (4) evaluate all active federal prostate cancer programs, and (5) ensure the inclusion of men at high risk for prostate cancer in clinical, research, and service efforts.

Recognizes the challenges in addressing health outcomes among people with Sickle Cell Trait and Sickle Cell Disease. Encourages the medical community to make individuals aware of their Sickle Cell Trait status. Urges the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a public awareness campaign regarding the importance of individuals knowing their Sickle Cell Trait status and to expand access for screening and counseling. Commits to supporting research on Sickle Cell Trait and Sickle Cell Disease.
