Kidney Disease

As a result of high prevalence of diabetes and high blood pressure, kidney disease disproportionately affects African American communities. African Americans are more at risk for kidney failure than any other race and represent roughly 1 in 3 patients living with kidney failure in the United States. Getting tested for diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease are key. Approximately 1 in 3 African Americans with diabetes do not know that they have it, and may not present any symptoms until it is too late. Because 1 in 5 African Americans is uninsured, they are less likely to get tested and their inability to manage these diseases properly may ultimately lead to kidney failure.

The CBC Health Braintrust is working to examine and address the health determinants of kidney disease as part of a focus on the prevention and management of chronic diseases to improve health outcomes in the African American community.
