Personal Background

Born in 1940, David grew up in the small town of Erwin in eastern Tennessee, where his father was a high school principal and his mother was an English teacher.  David studied at Mars Hill College and then at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar.  He earned his B.A. in 1961 and continued his education at Yale University, where he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree (1964) and a Ph.D. in Political Science (1969).

THE FOURTH DISTRICT

I am proud to represent North Carolina's Fourth Congressional District. Centered on what's called "The Triangle," this district includes parts of Orange, Durham, and Wake counties.  The Fourth District is widely recognized as one of the nation's best places to live, work, do business and raise a family.

In recent years, the Fourth District has experienced rapid economic and population growth. While the reconfigured Fourth District has retained some of its small towns and rural areas, there is a strong emphasis on research and development with Research Triangle Park (RTP) located in the heart of the district. Back in 1959, when I arrived in the Fourth District to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, few people had the vision that our area would become one of America's high-tech boom areas. RTP was born in 1959, the progeny of visionaries like Governors Luther Hodges and Terry Sanford, UNC sociology professor Howard Odum, industrialist Robert Hanes, investor Karl Robbins, contractor Romeo Guest, bankers Archie Davis and George Watts Hill, and others. It began as a research and development industrial park owned by the private, not-for-profit Research Triangle Foundation.

In addition to being a technology center, the Fourth District is also world-renowned for its institutions of higher learning. Visit my North Carolina Resources page for additional information about the fine organizations of the Fourth District as well as frequently requested links.
