Limited Non-Career Appointments (LNAs)
In an effort to supplement the work of career Foreign Service employees serving abroad, the U.S. Department of State offers LNA opportunities ranging from 15 months to 60 months, depending on the specific program.
The U.S. Department of State currently supports the following programs, and may expand its offering based on the needs of the Foreign Service:
- Medical Specialists (Protective)
- PEPFAR Country Coordinators (PEPFAR)
- Registered Nurses (RN)
- Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)
While these appointments are generally limited to a maximum of five years, the recruitment, selection and hiring processes use similar standards to those of the full-time Foreign Service Officer or Specialist positions. Additionally, all LNA candidates must pass medical, security, and final suitability clearance processes. All LNAs are members of the Foreign Service and have the same obligations and standard of conduct expectations as all Foreign Service employees. Those hired for the three LNA programs listed above are eligible for many of the same Foreign Service benefits, with a few exceptions that includes the Language Incentive Pay program, if language is a hiring prerequisite, and the Student Loan Repayment Program.
Medical Specialist (Protective)

Medical Specialists (Protective) serve at the Consulate General in Peshawar, Pakistan, as a part of the Mission Pakistan security and medical teams. They report to the post Regional Security Officer and receive clinical supervision from the Managing Director of Operational Medicine, Foreign Service Medical Providers or the Regional Medical Officer in Islamabad. This position is an integral part of medical, security, and protective details, and is responsible for providing direct patient care to U.S. Government personnel and eligible persons operating under Chief of Mission authority abroad.
PEPFAR Country Coordinator

The PEPFAR Country Coordinator leads the U.S. government PEPFAR interagency team in the designated country in the conception, formulation, and recommendation of initiatives in response to the HIV/AIDs epidemic in designated country. A master’s degree or higher in a relevant professional discipline such as Public Policy, Public Health, Business Administration or other related subjects are required.
Registered Nurse

RN LNAs are responsible for U.S. Department of State medical and safety policies, provision of a range of medical services, and the actual performance of all of the following essential functions in addition to routine medical care.
Social Worker

Licensed Clinical Social Worker LNAs will have multifaceted responsibilities in the Embassy which includes but is not limited to the assessment of psychiatric issues, conflict resolution, consultation on violence in the workplace, and crisis management training.
