Internships

As a former educator, I care deeply about the students and young people that intern in my Riverside and Washington, D.C. offices and want to ensure they have a rewarding internship. Above all, Congressional internships offer a valuable learning experience for interns to see how a Congressional office functions at both the local and national level and to explore a career in government. I'm always looking for bright and enthusiastic individuals with diverse backgrounds to help build a team devoted to public service and the interests of California’s 41st district.

Responsibilities vary between the Washington, D.C. and Riverside offices, but some main duties include:

  • Greet visitors at the front desk and answer phones.
  • Attend briefings and hearings for staff and write memos.
  • Assist in various constituent casework and District-based projects of importance.
  • Help with letter drafting and processing of constituent correspondence.
  • Occasionally lead tours of the U.S. Capitol Building for visitors.
  • Learn the legislative process by working in the midst of it.

Beyond the typical intern work listed above, my office is dedicated to making this an opportunity for you to hone and develop your skills. Please let my staff know what issues you are passionate about and they will try to incorporate that into your time with my office.

We accept applications on a rolling basis, but internships typically run in three month blocks throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Although all internships in this office are unpaid, interns gain invaluable work experience. Office hours are flexible to accommodate the schedules of each individual intern, but are generally 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.
