Members of the United States Congress are asked each year to make military academy nominations. This is to ensure a wide range of students from across the nation attend the academies.
Without a doubt, the military academies are some of the finest schools in our nation. Not only do they teach academics, but they instill discipline and leadership qualities in young Americans. For more information on military academies, watch the video here.
Students are strongly advised to contact their academies of choice in the spring of their high school junior year to begin their academy application process by submitting a “pre-candidate” questionnaire. Once your file is opened, the academies will begin to make a “whole-process” evaluation taking into consideration character, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness and motivation. It is important to be in communication with the academies even before you begin the process of seeking a Congressional nomination.
To apply for a nomination, potential appointees must complete an application (download here). The application is due on or before November 15th of the applicant’s senior year. My academy selection committee will schedule an interview with qualified applicants in December. This committee is composed of business, academic, and community leaders.
To apply for a nomination, the following eligibility requirements must be met by each applicant as of July 1 of the year of admission to the service academy:
- Age: Must be between the ages of 17 and 23.
- Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen and a resident of the 22nd Congressional District of California.
- Marital Status: Unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
My academy selection committee and the academies themselves look for a well-rounded person with academic qualifications, high test scores, and leadership abilities. Competition is tough!
After a congressional nomination is made, it’s then up to the individual academies to make their final decision. When that decision comes and applicants have succeeded in receiving an appointment, the real test begins. They will report in the summer prior to their freshman year to begin an intensive basic training program before they begin an intense and rewarding four-year education.
